  uc berkeley orders cancellation of ann coulter speech.

  officials at the university of california at berkeley on thursday reversed their decision to cancel a speech by conservative firebrand ann coulter.. the university had announced wednesday that it was canceling coulter’s appearance following several political protests in berkeley that turned violent.. but on thursday, the university said it had found a venue where it could hold the speech on may 2, instead of the original april 27 date.

  however, a leader of the college republican group that originally invited coulter said the university was placing strict conditions on the event, and he said his group intended to reject the new terms.. before the reversal was announced, coulter had vowed to go ahead with an appearance anyway.. that probably would have put security officials on high alert and might have sparked another showdown in struggles over campus safety, student views and ideological openness.. “what are they going to do?

  Some of stuff attributed to Ms. Coulter make her sound crazier than a loon, and a mean one at that. But that's no reason for a college to cancel an appearance that some of its students obviously wanted.

  She has the right to be heard, and the students who want to do so have the right to hear whatever she has to say. If other students don't want to hear her speak, even if they're vehemently opposed to everything she stands for, that's no reason to forbid her appearance. They can simply not come to the speech. Or lawfully "protest" outside the venue. Whatever makes 'em feel warm and fuzzy.

  There is absolutely no excuse whatsoever for violence of any kind just because someone who you don't approve of is giving a speech somewhere. Don't wanna hear it, don't go! Whiny babies! Those precious little safe-spacer snowflakes need to go back home and live in their mama's basement.

  It is possible that if this person could have been captured alive, something could have been learned that might have been useful in helping prevent other tragedies. Possible, could have, might have...

  I believe it is always regrettable when a human life ends prematurely, even when a death sentence is clearly justified and imposed by the law upon a person known for a certainty to be guilty of heinous violent crimes and still too dangerous to risk their ever being free. Regrettable, but sometimes necessary.

  That said, in this particular case, there was no question about this man's guilt, and his death by his own hand undoubtedly saved taxpayers the millions of dollars and months if not years of stress and anxiety that an investigation and trial would have involved. Not to mention the costs and uncertainty if he had ultimately been sentenced to death or even life without parole.

  This is truly a sad case for all involved. Especially so for the family of totally innocent victim, who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, through no fault of his own. But also for the murderer's girlfriend, whom he blamed for everything, but who in fact bears no responsibility at all for this tragedy.

  On a happier note, I hope the McDonald's employee who first recognized the fugitive gets the entire reward. It would be a shame if whoever offered the reward tried to weasel out of paying her, or if the other employees who simply followed her lead tried to get a piece of it. If she wants to share, fine. But I don't think they should feel entitled to any of it.

  I'm with ILoveTTATT2 in this.

  Ms. vienne has provided valuable and, more importantly, factually correct insight into the early founders of the organization that we've all been affected by in one way or another. She cites verifiable proof for her statements, documented references that can be verified by anyone with the inclination to do so. She draws no definitive conclusions about the motivations or character of her subjects. She wisely leaves that up to the discerning reader.

  And she does it all without ideological or theological agenda. Amazing!

  Anyway, my hat's off to Ms. vienne and those of her ilk who invest untold thousands of hours in tedious research to shed light on those of a bygone era whose actions had ramifications that are still felt today.

  Doggone it, Terry! You done did it again! I was all set to start on my taxes, but figured I'd catch on a little JWN while having my customary bowl of cereal for breakfast. Then I read your story and now I'm all distracted from visualizing your little adventure.

  You tell a great story, my friend. It felt like I was right there, riding along with you. I wouldn't want to place any bets on how much is fact and how much was liberated from your wonderful imagination, but it matters not. A good story doesn't have to be entirely factual to be enjoyed.

  And now... back to the tax games!

  New letter about Circuit Conventions accounting procedures

  i hope that one of the friends will post the letter soon.

  i heard that on 3/27/2017 a letter with new instructions about the accounts at the circuit conventions was released.

  the letter seems to adopt many of the corrections that had been suggested here at the forum, among other things during the accounts report they will be no mention of the per capita and the amount due is going to be released only to the elders.

  I guess it's better than nothing, but it's still weak and falls far short of what the ARC is looking for. The Society has shown that they can be quite duplicitous. They want to appear to be cooperating with the Commission and complying with the spirit of the law, but they will actually only obey the letter of the law, and then to the least extent possible, and only when finally forced to. They will not make any substantive changes unless compelled to by threats to their money and/or tax exempt status.

  I agree with other posters here that anyone asking for a copy will, at the very least, be viewed as a potential troublemaker and possible apostate. "Why do you want to see that, Sister? Don't you trust the Brothers to handle things like this Jehovah's way? Where is your faith?"

  It should be permanently posted in plain view in every Kingdom Hall, with a stack of printed copies available by the door. That ain't gonna happen...

  getting fired vs quitting_________________________my specialties in life are great and many, but none more fabulous than the talent i've possessed for getting fired and/or quitting a job.how many jobs and careers i blazed through would spin your head!

  suffice it to say, more than you've time or patience to hear.. there is something in my psychology and verbal arsenal too prone toward candid criticism!

  Great story, Terry. You're a great story teller and I always enjoy your tales of yore.

  The only thing I might have done differently is that I'd have showed up to collect my winnings and THEN quit. Do you know for a fact that Mike was gonna win anyway, or did you just figure he would? If you had showed up and Chuck did let Mike screw you out of your winnings, that would have been the time to expose their chicanery and then quit in protest. You could even do it in style, leaving, as the saying goes, "in a huff and a Cadillac." By quitting preemptively, you yourself guaranteed he'd win.

  I just noticed that it was OrphanCrow who posted the medical ethics article from 2006. He also added some important information and context related to the original news item that Barbara started this thread with.

  So thanks to you both. To Barbara for sharing the news story that started this discussion, and to OrphanCrow for providing the medical journal article that shows there is more to be considered than just catering to an individual's religious superstitions.
